ABSTRACT
The experience with 257 cases of elective cholecystectomy done at King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh is presented. Male to female ratio of 1:4.7 was similar to Western experience, but the disease is affecting our Saudi females at significantly lower age. A high incidence of hepatitis was noted [7.7%] with a significant higher incidence in the males [17.7%]. Bacteriobilia and wound infection incidence were similar to the International Standard. The increased morbidity noticed in cirrhotics was not different from that reported in western series

The incidence of wound dehiscence, infection and incisional hernia was tested in a prospective clinical trial comparing nylon sutures with vicryle. Two hundred twenty six patients were studied, 108 in the nylon group and 118 in the nylon group. The two groups were matched for all risk factors known. There was no significant difference in the rate of wound dehiscence, infection or incisonal hernia between the two groups
